  When possible, firearms evidence should be hand carried to the lab to limit the number of persons handling the evidence and to ensure that sufficient background data on the case is provided.  When hand carried, firearms need not be unloaded, if the unloading would interfere with fingerprint evidence, trace evidence, or weapon condition; however, precautions must be taken to ensure that the firearm does not become contaminated or changed.
